# 10) Before Pleasanton, there was a small town called Alisal which was known as “The Most Desperate Town in the West.” In 1894, it became part of Pleasanton.
# 9) Pleasanton was meant to be named after Union army cavalry Major General Alfred Pleasonton, with two O’s. However, a U.S. Postal Service employee in DC made a typo and the name Pleasanton became official!
# 8) The intersection where I-580 and I-680 meet actually mirrors the crossroads of Native American trade routes in the region. We didn’t actually realize this until the 20th Century.
# 7) Phoebe Apperson Hearst, mother of William Randolph Hearst, was once a Pleasanton resident.
# 6) The highest recorded temperature in Pleasanton history was a scorching 115 degrees, in September of 1950.
# 5) The location currently occupied by Comerica Bank at 600 Main Street had previously been a hardware store that had been open for over 100 years. It finally closed its doors in 2004.
# 4) The Racetrack at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton is officially the oldest 1-mile horse racing track in the entire United States.
# 3) The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department is home to the Centennial Light (https://www.centennialbulb.org/) which is the world’s longest-lasting light bulb. It is now in its 117th year of illumination!
# 2) Pleasanton has three sister cities: Tulancingo in Mexico, Blairgowrie and Rattray in Scotland, and Canada Fergus in Canada. And yes, “sister cities” is an actual diplomatic designation. The Rotary Clubs of Pleasanton just recently participated in a Wheelchair Donation/Distribution in Tulancingo, Mexico.
