It is that time of the year again and grocery stores are lining their shelves with pumpkin spice-flavored products. Should we get on the bandwagon and offer Pumpkin Spice Real Estate?
The flavor is simply a mixture of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and cloves—all spices that we have enjoyed in our food for a very long time. And notice… no pumpkin!
According to the late John Munro, an economics professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, “At one point in the 1300s, when tariffs were at their highest, a pound of nutmeg in Europe cost seven fattened oxen and was a more valuable commodity than gold,” Because of that, many traders traveled to the Banda Islands, which were among what were referred to as the “Spice Islands”, because they were the only place nutmeg was known to grow. And if you only had six fattened oxen or even a dozen skinny ones, forget about it… you were not getting any nutmeg! No pumpkin spice for you.
In fact, on Pulau Ay, one of the Banda Islands in Indonesia, archaeologists found ancient nutmeg residue on ceramic pottery shards that they estimate to be over 3,500 years old; long before Starbucks was around!
That all said, the ancient people of Indonesia were definitely onto something! Especially considering that nearly a half-billion dollars in pumpkin-flavored products were sold in the United States over the past year, according to the ratings company, Nielsen. Yes, that is Billion… with a B. Look at all of those zeros: $500,000,000.00
That’s right, we said “products”. The pumpkin spice latte craze has expanded well beyond the latte. And if we must say, it’s a bit out of control!
You can now get pumpkin spice coffee creamer, pumpkin spice marshmallows, pumpkin spice deodorant, pumpkin spice cookie dough, pumpkin spice English muffins, pumpkin spice body butter, pumpkin spice bagels, pumpkin spice hummus, pumpkin spice dog treats, pumpkin spice beer, pumpkin spice cheesecake, pumpkin spice pancakes, pumpkin spice yogurt, pumpkin spice ice cream, pumpkin spice popcorn, pumpkin spice peanut butter, pumpkin spice potato chips, pumpkin spice lip balm, pumpkin spice sausage, pumpkin spice seltzer water, and pumpkin spice oreos!
Oreos? What? That is blasphemous!!
Anyways, since this is the time of the year, and with so many choices, Pumpkin Spice products can be very enticing. But we at Elation Real Estate urge you to say NO to pumpkin spice anything!
The orange pumpkin population is on its way to extinction. Because of this craziness, in fields all across the country, pumpkin patches, once so vibrantly orange, now look like this…
Therefore, what will our kids do when Halloween comes and there are no more orange pumpkins? Can you imagine? A world without orange pumpkins? Like Bill Murray said in Ghostbusters, that would be like dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria! Definitely not a world we want to live in.
Save our orange pumpkins!!
Just Say No to the Pumpkin Spice <Fill in the Blank>!!
Well, that’s The Scoop for now. And as always, feel free to reach out to any one of us here at Elation Real Estate. You’ll know where to find us… no compass needed!
All the best,
Your Elation Real Estate Team
